`New Physics' Finds a Haven At the Patent Office

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is seriously understaffed, and its huge backlog has led to questionable patents for items including psychic energy sensors and cold fusion devices. Many newer USPTO examiners lack experience and training, contributing to the quality control problems. Critics claim that the USPTO is putting the desires of applicants ahead of the interests of the American people.

Malaria is caused by the plasmodium parasite, and replication of plasmodium's apicoplast is essential for the parasite to survive. Enzymes in a newly discovered apicoplast metabolic pathway may be valuable targets for antimalarial drug development.
